The first live investment event in South Africa
Up to 6 early stage startup founders will be selected from the Net Prophet Sparkup Weekend accelerator to take the stage and speak to a panel of angel investors. This year our investor panel features Bob Skinstad, former pro-rugby player. While audience members get a look into how investors’ think, evaluate and negotiate actual investment opportunities, we encourage offers of investment and mentorship from the audience.
Five of the 13 startups at the Weekend Programme had to pitch to the 3 Angel investors two of which walked away with investment pledged from both the Angels and the audience respectively.
While Wayne Gosling teetotaled and made no investments on the night, Paul Rutherford pledged $25,000 to Ugandan, Allan Rwakatungu of IntelWorld, spurring Silicon Cape Chairperson, Daniel Guasco to match from the audience. Matthew Bresler chimed in with an additional $10,000 bringing IntelWorld up to over R700,000.
Dylan Edwards of Vula Mobile broke Sparkup! Live history as Ernst Hertzog put up a whopping R450,000 which was matched by Brett Commaille of AngelHub Ventures from the audience. Fellow audience member, Vasili Sofiadellis brought the total investment in Vula Mobile up to R1mil with an additional R100,000. The other startups weren’t offered live investment but have all been given introductions and leads to many other local investors and all startups were invited to apply to Seedstars World.
Early stage entrepreneurs that successfully graduate from the Sparkup! Programme are given the opportunity to pitch to active angel investors. Last year’s Dragons included Justin Stanford, Andy Higgins, Daniel Guasco, Wayne Gosling and Mark Slingsby.
An intimate affair, it caters to local and African angel investors and VC’s plus industry mentors and experts. Audience participation is encouraged – we encourage offers of investment and mentorship from the audience. Non-VC audience members gained insight into how investors’ think, evaluate and negotiate actual investment opportunities.
Note that any investment agreement made on the night is subject to due diligence between the parties concerned. No deal is 100% binding on the night of the pitches, they are subject to final negotiation post-event. Sparkup!, Net Prophet, Saratoga or any sponsor/supporter parties will have no obligation or liability over negotiations and contracts that occur during or after the events.
